Dietary Salt Is a Public Health Hazard That Requires Vigorous Attack

      Abstract

      High blood pressure is the leading cause of premature mortality worldwide. Reducing salt intake lowers blood pressure and blood pressure-lowering reduces vascular disease. There is a very high likelihood that reducing dietary salt intake will prevent vascular disease and no evidence to suggest it will cause harm. With average population salt consumption levels typically 5-10 times greater than physiological requirements, even moderately effective community-wide salt reduction programs offer the potential for very large health gains. This opportunity has been recognized and adopted by the World Health Organization as a priority action to combat chronic diseases.

      L’hypertension artérielle est la principale cause de mortalité prématurée dans le monde entier. La réduction de l’apport en sel diminue la pression artérielle, et la diminution de la pression artérielle réduit la maladie vasculaire. Il existe une très forte probabilité que la réduction de l’apport alimentaire en sel prévienne la maladie vasculaire et aucune donnée pour montrer qu’il soit préjudiciable. Avec les niveaux moyens de consommation de sel parmi la population généralement de 5 à 10 fois plus élevés que les besoins physiologiques, même des programmes modérément efficaces de réduction de la consommation de sel à l’échelle de la communauté offrent le potentiel d’améliorer grandement la santé.
