Advantages and Barriers to International Electives for Cardiovascular Trainees

Diseases previously uncommon to a North American population, particularly communicable diseases, are now being seen in tertiary care centres across the country because of increasing migration and international travel. Factors such as ethnicity, disability, and poverty still affect access to cardiac care, yet these populations are most affected by cardiovascular disease, and the presence of disease can increase the degree of marginalization of these populations. These are among the reasons that interest in global health has increased among cardiovascular trainees, leading to creation of resources such as the American College of Cardiology International Cardiovascular Exchange Database and the Mayo International Health Program.
