I am very saddened to report the loss of a pioneer, a giant in Canadian cardiovascular
medicine and research, Dr Jean Gaston Dumesnil (Fig. 1) in December 2022. Jean’s passion for cardiovascular medicine, and particularly for
echocardiography and valvular heart disease, was evident in his care to patients,
his research, teaching, and mentoring. His contributions to cardiovascular health
care are outstanding and recognized nationally and internationally. The discoveries
and innovations that Jean accomplished during his amazing career has changed the clinical
practice and his mentoring has been instrumental in the launch and development of
the career of dozens of Canadian and international cardiologists.
