Sudden cardiac arrest is a leading cause of death in athletes and active individuals.
1
Although these events are rare, they have a profound psychologic impact on communities.
2
To identify athletes at risk of cardiovascular events, pre-participation screening
(PPS) is recommended by numerous international medical societies, including the Canadian
Cardiovascular Society (CCS) and Canadian Heart Rhythm Society (CHRS).
3
However, there is substantial variability in screening practices across Canada, and
no formal system to track athletic screening outcomes.
4
In an attempt to standardise PPS and facilitate the collection of screening data
from Canadian athletes, the Community and Athletic Cardiovascular Health Network (CATCHNet)
developed an online cardiovascular screening portal. This portal allows health care
providers to efficiently organise PPS requests and review patient information, all
while contributing to an athletic cardiovascular health research registry. The purpose
of the present commentary is to describe the infrastructure of this portal and to
promote its use within Canadian institutions aiming to incorporate a standardised
data collection tool for screening requests. To read this article in full you will need to make a payment
