Congenital Disorders of the Pericardium

Published:March 15, 2023DOI:https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cjca.2023.03.012
Congenital pericardial disorders include partial or complete absence of the pericardium, pericardial cysts and diverticula. These are rare lesions that are often mistaken for more common conditions. This review summarizes the diagnostic features, both clinical and through multimodal imaging, to provide clinicians the tools needed to recognize congenital pericardial disorders – and those rare occasions when these disorders have important clinical consequences. Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging is the gold standard for imaging of the pericardium. High quality evidence is lacking for definitive guidance on treatment, however management should be individualized to the patient’s symptoms and the hemodynamic impact of the disorder.
